Below are free music teaching resources for teachers in UK schools to help you save time spent on lesson planning for Key Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4. Primary or secondary school music teachers may find these websites useful for developing their own lesson plans or for signposting their pupils to innovative online content.

Key Stage 1

With Sing Up teachers can download free songs, lesson plans, warm activities and more. There are sections for news, school awards, a magazine and more.

Young children can make the Rodent Choir sing by clicking on the mice.

The Music House can be used online or downloaded. Instruments can be matched to sounds and pupils can copy them.

Key Stage 2

Kids can experiment with rhymes using Musically Interactive, which is ideal for use with an interactive whiteboard.

A fun BBC game is Musical Mysteries where children can copose their own tunes and learn about rhyming, musical instruments and use of moods. Flash Player is required.

Pupils can compose using a Virtual Keyboard accompaniesd by drumbeats. This tool can assist with work towards the National Curriculum of England's 'Composing and Appraising elements.

Key Stage 3

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra's Kids site is a guide to instruments, orchestras and composers.

Teachers can learn about Starting a School Band or Orchestra with the Music by Arrangement website.

The Play Music Orchestra website includes a range of tests to help pupils identify the sounds of instruments.

Key Stage 4

The Essentials of Music site gives an overview of classical music and how it has changed from the Middle Ages, Baroque, Classical and up to today.

Animated Music Theory Lessons are provided by a website that includes lessons, exercises and useful tools.

Energy in the Air Sounds of the Orchestra has clips of sounds and some scientific background of how sounds are made.
